In-car entertainment

My kids are driving me nuts on long journeys. Other than expensive portable DVD players (and several hours of eye-spy!), does anyone have any top tips for keeping them occupied?

Stickers are a great way of keeping bigger kids amused. I wouldn't really recommend reading as it does seem to bring on car sickness. I wish I was more PC but I find the DS invaluable!

Stickers / activity / colouring books...we brought my son an activity pack that clips over the back of the seat and acts as a little shelf to lean on for colouring and drawing and it was a god send! ( we also have the dvd player but actually find unless one childs asleep they just argued over what they wanted to watch!!)

That's exactly what happens in our car now! To begin with the DVD player was brilliant – didn't matter how long the journey was, we had peace and quiet for nearly all of it.

Now, the novelty has warn off and the differences with what the kids want to watch is huge, the arguments have ensued! To make matters worse, we've 3 kids and one 2 pairs of headphones, so end up using the car speakers – hearing Peppa Pig at full volume while negotiating a roundabout is tricky to say the least!

It's so funny to hear that other people have exactly the same issues. Our in car DVD has been a bit of a pain. We finally got used to reminding the kids to switch off the headphones - every time we got in the car, they had been left on and were dead- spent a fortune on batteries! Our's doesn't play through the main speakers- probably a blessing! Watching telly whilst moving seems to make our daughter throw up and if our son is watching she gets cross that he is happily amused and then the sneaky pinching etc. starts! The best thing we have found recently is to put a good CD on and all sing at the top of our voices :-) On long journeys we wear the kids out, feed them at tea time and set out post rush hr - they tend to be more compliant and the little one sleeps.
